Have you ever experienced the sound / music quality from a Bose Wave Radio or 3-2-1 system?
Maybe their advertising at Bose is all hype, like other companies. I had purchased a Wave Radio based on others’ information, but I am not impressed. I thought I would hear rich, quality sound but find it to be very flat and lifeless. I have now listened to a 3-2-1 system and the results are much the same.
Is it just me or is the sound quality not what is made out to be?
Despite their claims Bose is the least respected name in Audio…at least among audiophiles. Check any audio forum and see what is said about Bose.
I measured the distortion on the Wave Radio once and it was so bad I thought something was wrong with the equipment. I had to pull out another speaker to verify the measurement system wasn’t malfunctioning. Other than that, I like the Wave Radio, even recommended it on epinions. I did point out in the review that the internal speakers are useless and that it is only useful as a front end. If you connect its preamp output to an external amplifier and good speakers it’s great. It is however over priced given this is all its good for.
Interestingly, it isn’t even really stereo. The left speaker was used as the woofer and the right as the midrange. High frequency came from both giving it at least some stereo separation. It’s very cleverly designed but poorly implemented. The distortion is just too high and the bass is just too boomy. The waveguide creates a lot of stored energy issues which is the primary reason the bass is so boomy. Listen to male vocal on it, you can barely understand what is being said the voice is so tubby. So your choices are either to get rid of it or get some sort of compact amplifier and speakers to use with it and enjoy it. I’m not currently using mine but I originally had it connected to a 20 watt/ch amp driving a set of Altec A7 “Voice of the Theatre” speakers. It sounded fantastic!
I would definitely avoid Bose on anything larger. If you want a real audio system get any one of a number of popular brand receivers, some nice bookshelf speakers (or floor standing) and a powered subwoofer. The powered subwoofer will take a big load off the amplifiers in your receiver and off your speakers. By keeping the lowest bass of your main speakers their woofer cones move less reducing all sorts of distortion. Even if you are not looking for hard hitting deep bass the subwoofer will improve the performance of the rest of your system.
